Marwan Hamed

Marwan Hamed has carved out one of the most dynamic and internationally resonant careers in contemporary Arab cinema. Over more than 25 years, the Egyptian filmmaker has built a body of work that travels easily across borders — anchored by bold storytelling, a rich visual style, and a knack for translating complex social realities into gripping cinema.

Hamed’s global breakout began with THE YACOUBIAN BUILDING (2006), his audacious debut feature adapted from Alaa Al-Aswany’s bestselling novel. The most expensive film ever produced in Egypt at the time, it premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and went on to sweep through major festivals — from Tribeca, where Hamed won Best New Narrative Director, to Montréal, São Paulo, Chicago, Zurich, and Valladolid — cementing his place as a leading international voice from the region.

His short film LILI had already hinted at that trajectory, earning the Audience Award at Clermont-Ferrand and top prizes at Carthage and Milano. Hamed continued to expand his global footprint with 18 DAYS (2011), the multi-director anthology on the Egyptian Revolution that screened in Cannes’ Special Screenings program.

In 2025, Hamed’s latest feature, EL SETT, a sweeping biographical drama about the legendary Umm Kulthum written by Ahmed Mourad, will make its European premiere at the 55th Rotterdam International Film Festival. The festival is honoring Hamed with a career-spanning tribute and retrospective — an acknowledgment of his sustained international impact and the cultural weight of his filmography.

Festival acclaim runs parallel to Hamed’s towering presence in Arab commercial cinema. He has directed several of Egypt’s biggest-ever box-office hits, including THE BLUE ELEPHANT and its record-breaking sequel BLUE ELEPHANT: DARK WHISPERS — the highest-grossing film in Egyptian history at the time of its release. His subsequent works, DIAMOND DUST, THE ORIGINALS, and the historical epic KIRA & EL GIN, continued his streak of critical and commercial dominance.

Across genres — psychological thrillers, political dramas, historical spectacles — Hamed brings an unmistakable precision to world-building and performance direction. His films have collectively earned more than 30 awards, while his influence extends beyond cinema through hundreds of commercials and music videos for major global brands and artists.

Honored by institutions such as America Abroad Media and celebrated at festivals from Taormina to El Gouna to the Red Sea, Hamed remains one of the most significant filmmakers redefining Arab cinema for international audiences.
